What Does HIPAA Mean for Your IT Systems?

You hear "HIPAA" and think "only for doctors and hospitals." But if you handle ANY healthcare data - even employee health records or billing information - HIPAA rules apply to you.

⚠️ HIPAA applies to:

The IT Basics of HIPAA Compliance

1. Access Controls

Only authorized people should access health data. Every system needs unique logins and role-based permissions.

2. Encryption

Data must be encrypted at rest (stored) and in transit (sent). This protects against breaches even if storage is stolen.

3. Audit Trails

You need to know WHO accessed WHAT and WHEN. HIPAA requires detailed logging of all health data access.

4. Incident Response

Have a plan when (not if) something goes wrong. How fast can you identify, contain, and report a breach?

5. Business Associate Agreements

If other companies handle your health data (cloud providers, IT support, etc.), they must sign a BAA agreeing to protect that data.
